J

Java - Is a computer programming language that allows programs to run on a number of different types of computers and/or operating systems

JavaScript – Popular scripting language embedded into webpages. JavaScripts run on the Internet user's computer rather than the web server's computer. Search engines can not run JavaScripts.

Junk Pages – pages filled with keywords but with unconnected meaning. These pages serve no purpose other then to spam the search engines

Key Performance Indicators (KPI) – Usually long-term considerations for an organization, KPI are used to measure and define goal achievements within the organization.

Keyword – A keyword (or keyword phrase) is the name used to describe the word or phrase a searcher is most likely to use to find relevant websites.

Keyword Density – This is the concentration percentage (compared to the overall word count) of the keyword or keyword phrase on a web page. Each search engine algorithm has its own "optimum" keyword density. The density can be obtained from the page body text, meta tags, alt tags, links and headings.

Keyword Domain Name – A domain name made up of keywords related to the site content. This can help improve positioning on some search engines.

Keyword Phrase – a search phrase made up of keywords. See "keyword."

Keyword Popularity – How often a specific keyword search is done by internet users over a given period of time.

Keywords Prominence – The actual placement of a keyword in the HTML code of a web page. The closer to the beginning of a page particular word is, the more prominent it is and the more weight the search engine assign to that word when matched to search engine query.

Keyword Research – The research involved in determining the words and phrases that are most commonly used to find something with search engines

Keyword-Rich – when a page or section of text is filled with keywords rather then words that are irrelevant to the page content. (e.g. "welcome", "click here")

Keyword Stuffing / Spamming – The placement of excessive amounts of keywords into the page copy and the HTML in such a way that it detracts from the readability and usability of a given page. Used for the express purpose of increased rankings in search engines. The camouflaging of text by changing text color to match the background, hiding keywords in comment tags, overfilling alt tags with strings of keywords, etc.

Such tactics are strongly discouraged by search engines and penalties for doing such can be severe.

L

Landing Page – The web page that a visitor clicks through to from the search results.

Link Bait – Web content designed to compel users to link to it. Often in the form of useful or entertaining content.

Link BuildingThe process of attempting to increase link popularity through link requests with webmasters of other sites as well as directory submission, viral marketing and socail media.

Link Popularity –Search engines liken link popularity to the number and quality of links to a particular page, including both inbound and reciprocal links. Greater page (or link) popularity can factor greatly in where your pages are ranked. You can find a free service to measure your page's popularity at www.linkpopularity.com.

Links – a graphic or text line that connect to another web page location. Links are a synonym for hotlinks or hyperlinks.

Listings – See Positioning.

Log Files –generated by the server and contain a record of all actions performed on a website. Information about visitors can be obtained through web analytics of these files.
